Regan Smith Demonstrates Versatility with Two Personal Bests in Pro Series Action

Between the Olympic Games and World Championships, Regan Smith owns 22 medals. That total, which is expected to grow in the coming years, should land Smith eventual induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. But Smith doesn’t get the appreciation she deserves for her range, which extends beyond her well-known exploits in the backstroke and butterfly events.

During the recent USA Swimming Pro Series competition in Westmont (Ill.), Smith put her versatility on display, as she registered personal-best times in two events that are not typically part of her program. First, Smith clocked a time of 4:35.79 in the 400-meter individual medley, which makes her the 16th-fastest American in the history of the event. She followed with a 1:56.94 effort in the 200 freestyle, marking her first trip under the 1:57 barrier.

Smith will race later this month at the China Open, where she is entered in all three backstroke events, along with the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly.

As Smith works toward a third Olympic appearance at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles, she will undoubtedly focus on her bread-and-butter disciplines of backstroke and butterfly. However, it’s worth a glance at Smith’s complete body of work, which recognizes the range she possesses.
