Rains, Strouse Lead Rogers High to Washington 4A State High School Crown; Kukors Sets State Mark

FEDERAL WAY, WA., Nov. 15. NO more Ms bridesmaid status for Coach Heather Hoskins and her Lady Rogers Rams, thank you very much.

Riding the broad shoulders of junior All-America freestyler-backstroker Megan Rains and senior Emily Strouse, Rogers moved up from its No. 2 status at last year's state meet and splashed to a convincing 266-200.50 win over last year's champ, Capital. Gig Harbor (168) was third.

As a sophomore last season Rains won the state title and ranked sixth nationally in the 200 IM (2:02.04) and 19th in the 100 back (56.73). This evening she powered to a state record and nation-leading 1:48.77 200 free win, was victorious in the 100 back (pr 56.44) and led off the Rams' state record-setting 200 medley relay.

Rogers' winning relay time (1:45.82) would have ranked the Rams fourth nationally in '02. The team of Rains, Jesika Heidloff, Chelsey Freeman and Cora Freeman broke the old record of 1:47.06 set 18 years ago, in 1984.

Strouse was runner-up in the 200 IM (pr 2:02.14), won the 100 fly (56.29) and swam on Rogers' record-setting 400 free relay too.

Another impressive swimmer was Auburn senior Emily Kukors' school-standard in the 200 IM (2:01.14), just missing the Washington state record of 2:01.10 by Colubia Rivers' Kari Edwards from eight years ago; and her state record in the 100 free (50.29).

The old mark was a 50.33 by Sara Platzer, now a junior All-America at UCLA, where she's the Bruin school record-holder in the sprints (22.44-49.33).

Kukors was defending champ in the 100 free (50.96) and was runner-up to Rains last year in the 200 IM (2:02.24).

Oak Harbor sophomore Missy McIntyre defendind her 100 breast title (1:04.30) and added the 50 free title with a nail-biting 23.92-23.97 win over Rogers' Cora Freeman. In the prelims, McIntyre went a season-best 23.75.

Kentworth froshwoman Courtney Eronemo fared well too, racing to second in the 100 fly (56.42) and third in the 200 IM (2:04.07).

Decautur's Sandy Hong won the 500 free (5:00.24) and was fourth in the 200 free; Gig Harbor won the 200 free relay (1:38.71); Juanita's Alyson Carlyon won the i-meter diving and Rogers climaxed the competition by blasting to a state-record in the 400 free relay set 11 years ago. The team clocked 3:31.34 in prelims, breaking the old mark of 3:33.48, then lowered that time to 3:29.68 in the finals. That time would have ranked the Rams eighth nationally last season.

Rogers' win was the first state championship for the school in 20 years. Rogers also became the first school in the South Sound region to win a state title.
