Quintet of Olympians Will Compete at Janet Evans Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif., USA, July 13. THE Janet Evans Invitational begins Thursday at the McDonald’s Swim Stadium, on the campus of the University of Southern California. The first day of action will begin with 5 p.m. finals in the 800-meter freestyle events while the remainder of the competition (Friday through Sunday) features 9 a.m. preliminaries and 5 p.m. finals. The meet is the final stop on the U.S. Grand Prix circuit.

The event is named for the greatest female distance swimmer in history. A four-time Olympic champion, Evans still holds world records in the 400, 800 and 1,500 freestyles. Five Olympians will compete in Los Angeles, including Dana Kirk and Kalyn Keller. Other Olympians include Staciana (Stitts) Winfield, Gabe Woodward and Rhi Jeffrey.

Aside from the former Olympians present, the Janet Evans Invitational will serve as a tuneup meet for several members of the United States squad bound for the World University Games. That group includes Justin Mortimer, Chris DeJong, Hayley Peirsol and Terry Silkaitis.
