NEW COMMIT: Myrtle Beach, S.C. breaststroker Taylor Steele has announced her verbal commitment to stay in-state and swim for South Carolina in the fall of 2019. She will join Emily Horomanski as members of the class of 2023.

Swimming for Coastal Aquatic Club under head coach Fabio Silva, Steele is a U.S. Open qualifier in both breaststroke distances. She has improved tremendously over the past year, dropping four seconds in the 100 breast and eight seconds in the 200. She wrapped up her long course season with a seventh-place finish and a best time in the 100m breast (1:10.46) at Junior Nationals and was a two-time champion at the SC LCM Championships. At the Greensboro Speedo Sectionals in March, she won the 200 breast in a lifetime best of 2:14.30.

Steele also represents Carolina Forest High School where she was the 100 breast (1:03.77) champion and the 200 IM (2:06.44) runner-up at the SCHSL 5A State Championships as a junior. During her sophomore campaign, she placed fourth in the 100 breast (1:07.62).

She told Swimming World:

“I’m so excited to spend the next four years at the University of South Carolina! The coaching staff and team make me feel so welcome and create an amazing environment. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:01.73
  • 200 breast – 2:14.30
  • 200 IM – 2:05.90
  • 50 free – 24.14

She’ll be extremely valuable to the Gamecocks’ roster when she arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season. Her best 100 breast time would’ve scored in the C-final of the 2018 SEC Championships while her fastest 200 would’ve been just outside scoring range.
