NEW COMMIT: The University of Minnesota has gained another verbal commitment for fall of 2019 from New Braunfels, Texas native Isaac Barrera.

Barrera swims year-round for Alamo Area Aquatic Association and is a four-time Junior National qualifier. He posted four top-8 finishes at Rochester Futures over the summer which included a second-place showing in the 200m IM. He recorded a pair of best times at Austin Sectionals, raced at Juniors West last winter and notched six lifetime bests at NCSAs in March.

Also competing for New Braunfels High School, Barrera is a three-time Texas 6A State Championship finalist. The NISCA All-American placed eighth in both the 200 free and 100 fly as a junior after placing 13th in the former during his sophomore season.

He told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to further my education and swimming career at the University of Minnesota! The combination of amazing coaching staff, teammates and academics make it the perfect fit for me. Go Gophers!”

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:39.53
  • 500 free – 4:34.18
  • 100 fly – 49.55
  • 200 IM – 1:54.31
  • 400 IM – 4:01.36

Barrera has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. He has dropped three seconds in his 200 free, four in his 500 free, eight in the 100 fly and 21 in his 400 IM. The Golden Gophers finished fifth at last season’s Big Ten Championships.
