Bristol, Indiana’s Katie Hughes verbally committed to Purdue University. Hughes is a senior at Northridge High School and swims for Northridge Area Swimming Association. Hughes had a very successful 2016 Indiana Girls High School State Championship meet. In the 200 freestyle she touched fifth (1:50.23) before turning in a runner up 4:53.57 in the 500 freestyle. She also anchored (23.85) her school’s seventh place 200 freestyle relay and the squad’s ninth place 400 freestyle relay (51.68).
Hughes shared,
“So happy to announce my commitment to Purdue University!! Can’t wait to continue my academics as a Boilermaker and swim on this team! BOILER up!”
Her top times are:
- 200 Free 1:50.20
- 500 Free 4:53.57
- 1000 Free 10:20.59
- 1650 Free 17:11.19
Hughes is not quite yet a Big Ten scorer. In 2016, Hughes did take two seconds off her best 200 freestyle time. With a year and a half until her first Conference Championships, she could move into scoring range. Alexa Davis, Kaersetn Meitz, and Grace Hernandez led the Boilermakers’ 200 freestyle efforts last season.
