On the Cover

More and more swimmers are using a whip start in backstroke, applying the same principles–entering through a single hole in the water and flexing the trunk in a whipping action for added propulsion-that have made the forward dive whip start so popular. In a study by Dick Green, head swim coach at the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse, swimmers were taught both the conventional and whip start and subsequently timed in one-length sprints, using both starts. For the results of the study, see page 8.
