On the cover

In any swimming race, at no time is the swimmer moving faster than during the start. How to take advantage of that opportunity is the subject of two articles in this issue. On page 30, two Canadian researchers compare the armswing, grab and whip starts using statistical analysis of cinematographic data. Then, on page 35, a new wrinkle is added to the old question of how to get off the blocks faster.

Also in this issue, the team of Ross Yancher, Orvel Larsen and Clarence Baer strikes again with two studies of velocity curves in swimming. The same threesome that brought you “Boat Design and Swimming Performance” (Aug.-Oct. ‘8!) now gives the coach further analytical tools to improve times.
