Pittsburgh M/W Knock Off Virginia Tech

PITTSBURGH, PA, January 30. THE Virginia Tech men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match-up, reported VT.

The women lost 139.5-103.5, while the men's match came down to the last relay, which the Panthers won by one-tenth of a second to secure a 125-118 win over the Hokies.

On the men's side, the Hokies' 400 medley relay team took first in a time of 3:22.68. Tom Alberi, Kevin Furlong, Scott Beard and Aaron Sherman were on the relay team.

Alberi continued his winning way in the 50 freestyle, coming in first with a time of 21.13. He also finished third in the 200 backstroke.

Furlong won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:05.08, while also placing second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.82.

Freshman Zac Czaplicki won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:42.05. He also won the 100 freestyle in 46.60.

Beard took second in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:49.61. In the 400 freestyle relay, Beard's squad finished second in 3:05.06. Sherman, Czaplicki and Jake Bova were also on the relay team.

Sophomore Gus Calado took second place in the 1,000 freestyle with a mark of 9:37.16. Senior Mike Della Noce finished third in the 500 freestyle and in the 200 breaststroke.

Stephen Jensen placed second in the 200 IM, while Neil Savage finished right behind him for third. Jensen also took third in the 200 butterfly.

Freshman Austin Fiehler was second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.82.

Trevor Jamerson came in third in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:44.19. He was also on the third place 400 freestyle relay team with Tommy Evans, Pete Cancila and Casey Moore. Senior Doug Roper finished third in the three-meter event with a score of 233.40.

On the women's side, Mason Walsh took first in the 50 freestyle, edging Jordan Wallace at the finish. Walsh won the event with a time of 23.41. Jessica Botzum also took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.30.

Diver Laura Lunn won the one-meter event with a score of 239.25. Lunn also placed second in the three-meter event.

Millie Campbell won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.54. She was also second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.90.

Katy Peterson, Laura Campbell, Becky Horning and Emily Guschke combined to place second in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:52.72.

Walsh and Guschke finished in second and third place, respectively, in the 100 freestyle.

Peterson was second in the 200 backstroke, while Talita Ribeiro came in third in the event. Senior Jeanette Batten was second in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:17.41.

Freshman Beth Byrum was second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 1,000 freestyle. Emily Chen took third in the 200 IM. Chen also took third in the 200 butterfly.

Two Tech squads finished in the top three in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Courtney Walsh, Whitney Johnsen, Guschke and Mason Walsh finished second with a time of 3:32.03. The team of Laura Campbell, Juliana Daniell, Sarah Gardner and Peterson placed third.

The men return to action against VMI at noon on Saturday, Feb. 5. The meet will be held in War Memorial Pool. The women begin preparation for the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, which will be held in Atlanta, Ga., from Feb. 16-19.
