The 2018 Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships splashed into action today in Irvine, California. The championships serve as the qualifying meet for multiple major international meets in both 2018 and 2019, including the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships, 2019 World Championships, and 2019 Pan American Games.

Several of America’s top swimmers earned national victories in their signature events on night one, while a handful of upsets occurred as well.

One of the main highlights of the evening was Simone Manuel’s new U.S. Open record in the women’s 100 free , along with Hali Flickinger downing Mary T. Meagher’s 37-year-old U.S. Open record in the women’s 200 fly.

Justin Wright and Blake Pieroni surprised many in the swimming community by pulling off upset wins in both the 200 fly and 100 free respectively.

Swimming World’s chief photographer Peter H. Bick was on deck capturing the action and excitement, while Swimming World’s Andy Ross and David Rieder captured video interviews throughout the finals session.

Remember to follow along with all of Swimming World’s coverage of the 2018 Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships on the national championships meet page.
