Phelps Snags Daily Double with Meet Record Time in 200 Fly

IRVINE, Calif., Aug. 2 MICHAEL Phelps pulled the daily double with a second conquest during day two finals with a meet record in the 200-meter butterfly at the 2006 ConocoPhillips USA Swimming Nationals Championships. He stopped the clock in 1:54.32, to eclipse his previous meet standard of 1:54.86 set in 2002.

At the 50-meter mark, Phelps went under world-record pace by .11 seconds with a 25.84 split. At the 100-meter mark, Phelps remained under pace by .02 seconds with a 54.87. He fell a bit off the pace with a 1:24.43 at the 150-meter mark.

"You can always tell when the crowd is with you and they are cheering you through every stroke," Phelps said. "You always know when something exciting is happening. The butterfly has been the stroke that's felt the best the past few weeks.

"To come in and be so close, it's kind of disappointing, but on the same end, I have a number of things I know right now from swimming that race that I can fix. My turns were just horrible today. I chopped every wall and hit it short every time. Hopefully, those things I can improve on going into Pan Pacs, and hopefully I can get faster."

Meanwhile, Club Wolverine teammate Davis Tarwater cruised in at 1:57.00 for silver, while North Baltimore's Daniel Madwed copped bronze in 1:58.16.

In the B final, Tucson Ford’s Darren Maxwell jumped out to an early lead at the 100-meter mark with a 57.79 from lane eight. Swim Atlanta’s Matt Bartlett, however, overtook the lead at the 150-meter mark with a 1:29.20. Overall, Cabrillo Thrasher Tom Zaferes rolled to victory in 2:00.75, while Bartlett finished second in 2:01.05, and Sierra Marlin David Seiler took third from lane one in 2:01.06.

In the C final, California Aquatics’ Patrick O’Neill (56.72) and Swimming World Magazine’s Male National High School Swimmer of the Year Ricky Berens (56.88) battled through the halfway mark. Berens then pulled ahead at the 150-meter mark, before salting away the triumph in 2:00.29. Meanwhile, O’Neill closed in with a second-place 2:01.35, while Cincinnati Marlin Timothy Williams garnered third in 2:02.19.
