Phelps Blasts Impressive Time in 100-yard Butterfly

ANN ARBOR, Michigan, January 31. IT isn’t often that Michael Phelps competes in a short-course yardage format. But, when the eight-time Olympic medalist does get the chance, he certainly makes the most of the opportunity. Over the weekend, Phelps contested a one-man exhibition and clocked a mark of 46.03 in the 100 butterfly.

A volunteer assistant coach at the University of Michigan, Phelps registered the time during a break in Michigan’s Big Ten Conference dual-meet triumph over Ohio State on Saturday. The time established a Canham Natatorium pool record and bodes well for the upcoming weekend, where Phelps is scheduled to race at the New York stop on the World Cup circuit.

During World Cup action, Phelps (Club Wolverine) is entered in the 100, 200 and 400 individual medley events and is also expected to contest the 200 freestyle.
