Penn State Women’s Swimming And Diving Trails No. 12 Indiana, Continue Tri-meet with Hoosiers, Pittsburgh Saturday

UNIVERSITY PARK, Penn., Jan. 23. THE Penn State versus Indiana women’s swimming and diving meet at McCoy Natatorium is living up to its Top 25 billing.

The 12th-ranked Hoosiers lead the 13th-ranked Nittany Lions 59-47 after six events. Penn State also has an 87-23 lead over Pittsburgh and Indiana is leading the Panthers 84-25 heading into Saturday’s final day of action.

The three teams will get started at 9:30 a.m. and will wrap up the two-day event beginning at 3 p.m. at McCoy Natatorium.

Penn State won two of the evenings six events as Sally Anderson (Somerset, N.J.) won the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA “B” cut time of 4:50.77. She was followed by teammate Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) in 3:53.52.

Sophomore Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) won the one-meter diving
competition with a score of 283.65. Maggie O’Brien (Minnetonka, Minn.) was
second with 279.68 and Lisa Silvestri (Nazareth, Pa.) was third with 277.35.

The Hoosiers won the other four events as their 200 freestyle relay team hit an NCAA “B” time in 1:33.25. Penn State’s Genie Cheng (Oak Park, Calif.), Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado
Springs, Co.) and Larissa Kavchok (Emmaus, Pa.) were second in 1:34.92.

Indiana’s Brook Taflinger also set an NCAA “B” time in the 200 Im with
a time of 2:03.73. Junior Courtney Stanchock (Bloomsburg, Pa.) finished
third in 2:06.18 and Biedermann was fourth in 2:06.59.

The Hoosiers’ Meghan Mendendorp paced all swimmers in the 50 freestyle
with a time of 23.66 and Indiana won the 400 medley relay in 3:44.61.
