Penn State Starts 2023 Recruiting With Verbal From Cooper Morley of New Zealand

NEW COMMIT: Penn State has received its first verbal commitment for the 2023-24 season and beyond from backstroker Cooper Morley of Auckland, New Zealand.

He told Swimming World:

“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim for Penn State University 2023 team! Special thanks to everyone for their support throughout the recruitment process. I can’t wait to be part of an amazing swim team!! Go Nittany Lions.”

Morley last competed at the New Zealand Short Course Championships in April where he earned a best time in the 100m back. He recorded three top-8 finishes at the New Zealand National Championships earlier that month and earned bronze in the 100m back at the 2019 New Zealand Short Course Championships.

He trains year-round with North Shore Swimming Club.

In LCM, his best times include:

  • 50 back: 26.70
  • 100 back: 58.06
  • 200 back: 2:09.26

In SCY, those times convert to:

  • 50 back: 22.74
  • 100 back: 49.64
  • 200 back: 1:52.32

Morley currently attends Rangitoto College and will be taking a gap year before arriving in State College. He swept both the 100m and 200m back at the 2021 New Zealand Secondary School Championships.
