Peirsol Cruises to 1500 Free Title on Fifth Day of World University Games

IZMIR, Turkey, August 16. HAYLEY Peirsol annihilated the World University Games record in the 1500 freestyle, touching in 16:08.06. The old record, held by Becky Cooke of Great Britain, was 16:14.70. Cooke took second in the race, more than 14 seconds behind Peirsol.

Russia took gold in two events tonight, one in the women's 50 fly and the other in the men's 200 free. Vasilissa Vladykina touched out the United States' Dana Vollmer to win the 50 fly in a new meet record of 26.88. Vollmer finished with a 26.91 for silver.

Yuri Prilukov earned another medal tonight, this time in the men's 200 free. He barely beat out Ross Davenport from Great Britain, the morning's top qualifier. Prilukov won in meet record style with a 1:49.12, taking it away from Davenport who broke the old record in prelims.

The men's 400 I.M. was won by Eric Shanteau in 4:18.64, proving he is the king of the WUG I.M. after winning the 200 version earlier. Peter Nagy of Hungary was second, 2:20.05, and Patrick Mellors of the United States finished fourth.

There was another meet record set tonight, this time in the men's 50 fly. Sergiy Breus (UKR) edged out Evgeny Korotyshkin (RUS) for the gold in a time of 23.63 seconds. Korotyshkin touched at 23.69.

The women from the United States ended the evening with a victory in the 400 medley relay. The team of Hayley McGregory (1:03.07), Megan Jendrick (1:07.73), Demerae Christianson (1:00.36) and Maritza Correia (55.84) clocked in at 4:07.00. Japan was second in 4:08.99, and Russia was third in 4:10.36.
