LAUSANNE, Switzerland, January 25. FINA announced yesterday that its Honorary Member Klaas van de Pol of The Netherlands, passed away on Jan. 23 at the age of 87.
Van de Pol served as the FINA Honorary Treasurer from 1980-92, and became an Honorary Member of the organization in 1996. Van de Pol primarily worked to promote women's water polo globally, and also worked with FINA early on with marketing strategies for all of aquatic sports. In 1988, he earned the FINA Gold Pin for his contributions to aquatic sports.
At home in The Netherlands, he served as the chairman of the national governing body from 1978-91, and as the treasurer and president of the European Swimming Association (LEN) from 1978-90.
