Parry, Foster Win on Day One of British Short Course Champs

CAMBRIDGE, England, Sept. 12. THE four-day British National Short Course Championships got under way at Parkside Pool in Cambridge today. The meet is also serving as the qualifying meet for the European Short Course Championships in Germany in December.

Steve Parry, 25, a silver medalist in the 200m fly at the Commonwealth Games in July, demonstrated his versatility tonight by winning both the 200m backstroke and the 200m individual medley, recording times in both events that meet qualifying standards for the continental meet. He clocked an English national record of 1:54.49 in the backstroke, beating the current British record-holder Gregor Tait, but Tait's second place time of 1:55.57 may still permit him to go to the Euros. His 1:59.50 for the IM was just two-hundredths faster than Adrian Turner.

After his second win, Parry, a Florida State University grad, commented: "To get that close to the British record in the backstroke and to get the English record is really good especially as it's not in my main event. I just focus on winning and now I should give some thought to what I events I should concentrate on. Nothing will rival my 200m butterfly, but these other events are now looking good for me this year.

"To beat Adrian today in the IM event was fantastic and just icing on the cake as it was a quality field. I'll be looking to go out to the Europeans and pick up a few medals now."

Adam Faulkner won the 400m free in 3:46.14, with seventeen year-old David Davies, from City of Cardiff in Wales, was second in 3:48.44, a national age group mark, as both men qualified for the Europeans.

Tirty-two year-old spring king Mark Foster took the 50m free in 22.36, notching his tenth tenth British title in this event, with 18 year-old Owen Morgan iof Wales second in 22.96.

After the race Foster commented: "Swimming for a living is a wonderful thing and I think I've got a lot more left in me. It was a case of coming here and beating anyone that might have been able to beat me. I'd like to get world records at the world cups but I need to be in good shape to do that. I start training seriously on Monday."

Two of tonight's women's finals were won by junior swimmers breaking through to win their first senior titles. Sixteen year old Alex Savage won the 200m individual medley in a personal best time of 2:16.03 and seventeen year old Terri Dunning won the 200m butterfly in a pr 2:14.47.

In the absence of Zoe Baker, Rachel Genner, 20, won the 50m breaststroke in 32.37.
