Paris Olympic Medals May Have Three Detachable Parts for Sharing

With the awarding of the 2024 Olympic Games between Paris and Los Angeles still in process, Olympic medals for seven years from now are not likely at the forefront of many peoples’ minds. The Paris 2024 organizers cannot be included in this population.

Based on Paris’ long-standing history with the Olympic Games, the IOC evaluation committee praised the organizers on their creativity and authenticity in their 2024 bid. As of July 11, neither Paris nor L.A. has been awarded hosting duties, but the IOC is in support of awarding both the 2024 and 2028 Olympic Games this year.

Speculators believe that the IOC will award the first set of Games to Paris, and the latter to L.A. Regardless of which time frame Paris receives, they are already working toward revolutionizing the Olympic Games via one of the event’s most classic details – the Olympic medals.

According to NBC Sports, the Paris Olympic organizers have developed a thicker medal comprised of four parts. Three of these are removable, intended for the athlete to physically share their accomplishment with three of the most instrumental people in their life or Olympic journey.

Paris 2024 also shared their idea in the following Tweet:

The Tweet features previous French Olympic and Paralympic medalists who expressed that they would have shared their medals with their parents, children, coaches and athletic trainers.

The idea of the four-part Olympic medal came from triple Olympic canoe champion and Paris 2024 co-bid leader Tony Estanguet. French designer Philippe Starck, who created the 1992 Albertville Winter Games torch, completed the design.

“Normally a medal tends a sort of witness, a message that says, ‘I was there, I did it, I outdid myself. I went beyond myself. I won. It is extraordinary,’” Starck said via a Paris 2024 translation. “But today more than ever, the truth is that you’re not winning alone. So I wanted this medal to reflect that. If the winner wants to share it, he can share it. It’s a really nice way of truly showing team spirit. The winner can literally take his or her medal … and separate it into pieces that can be given away. That way, everyone you share it with becomes a witness of such an important moment.”
