IRVINE, California, August 19. THE U.S. got back into the win column in the women's 400 IM for its fourth gold of the evening when USA's Elizabeth Beisel crushed the field at the Pan Pacific Championships.
Beisel raced to a winning time of 4:34.69, just off her Pan Pacific record time of 4:34.04 set during prelims that made her the second fastest swimmer in the world behind Hannah Miley (4:33.09). Beisel gave the U.S. a second straight win in the event, defending Katie Hoff's 2006 title (4:36.82).
Australia's Samantha Hamill finished a distant second in 4:37.84, while USA's Caitlin Leverenz placed third in 4:38.03. Hamill moved to 11th in the world, while Leverenz has been faster with a sixth-ranked 4:35.60 at U.S. Nationals.
Japan's Izumi Kato (4:40.43), New Zealand's Natalie Wiegersma (4:41.93), Canada's Alexandra Komarnycky (4:42.25), Japan's Maiko Fujino (4:42.28) and Canada's Lindsay Seemann (4:45.36) made up the rest of the A final.
USA's Ariana Kukors topped the B final with a time of 4:38.05.
