Pan American Games Day 5 Finals: Rachel Stege, Sydney Pickrem Break Meet Records; USA Wins Men’s Medley Relay

It is the final session for the 2023 Pan American Games from Santiago, Chile.

The finals will consist of the 1500 free, 200 IM and 400 medley relay.

Here is a look at the events:

Women’s 1500 Free

USA’s Rachel Stege started the final night with a bang, crushing the Pan American Games record in the 1500 free.

Stege put together a swim of 16:13.59 to break the meark of 16:16.54 set by Argentina’s Delfina Pignatiello in 2019 to win the gold medal.

Chile’s Kristel Kobrich took the silver in 16:14.59, also under the previous meet record.

Brazil’s Viviane Jungblut claimed the bronze in 16:19.89.

Brazil’s Beatriz Pimentel took fourth (16:24.65), followed by Argentina’s Agostina Hein (16:35.63) and USA’s Erica Sullivan (16:41.21).

 

Women’s 200 IM

The Canadian women had a stellar week at the Pan American Games and capped that in the final women’s individual event with a 1-2 finish.

Sydney Pickrem broke the meet record to win the 200 IM in 2:09.04, breaking the previous mark set by USA’s Caitlin Leverenz in 2015 (2:10.51).

Mary-Sophie Harvey continued her stellar meet with a silver medal in the event, finishing in 2:11.93.

USA’s Kennedy Noble took the bronze in 2:14.19.

 

Men’s 200 IM

Canada made it a sweep of the 200 IM events when Finlay Knox claimed the gold medal in the men’s event. He got to the wall in 1:58.74.

USA’s Arsenio Bustos earned the silver medal in 1:59.89 to finish ahead of Brazil’s Leonardo Coelho (2:00.58), who claimed the bronze

 

Men’s 1500 Free

Brazil’s Guilherme Costa claimed the gold medal in the 1500 free, earning a three-second win. He got to the wall in 15:09.29.

USA’s Will Gallant took the silver medal in 15:12.93.

Venezuela’s Alfonso Mestre won the bronze medal in 15:19.60.

 

Women’ 400 Medley Relay

Canada claimed the gold medal in the women’s 400 medley relay to close out the women’s portion of the Pan American Games.

Danielle Hanus, Rachel Nicol, Maggie Mac Neil and Mary-Sophie Harvey teamed up to finish in 3:59.39 and finish the meet in winning fashion.

Team USA earned the silver with Josephine Fuller, Emma Weber, Kelly Pash and Catie DeLoof getting to the wall in 3:59.39.

Mexico’s Miranda Grana, Melissa Rodriguez, Maria Mata Cocco and Sofia Revilak earned the bronze in 4:04.73.

 

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

Team USA closed the meet with a gold medal in the men’s 400 medley relay.

Jack Aikins, Jake Foster, Lukas Miller and Jonathan Kulow got to the wall in 3:33.29.

Brazil’s Guilherme Basseto, Joao Gomes, Vini Lanza and Gui Caribe took the silver in 3:35.12.

Canada’s Blake Tierney, Gabe Mastromatteo, Finlay Knox and Javier Acevedo took the bronze in 3:35.72.
