Pair of Irish Records Set at U.S. Spring Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, April 16. WHEN the United States Spring Championships were held at the Weyerhaueser King County Aquatic Center earlier this month, a pair of Irish national records were established by athletes swimming at American colleges: Kentucky’s Steve Manley and Tennessee’s Barry Murphy.

In Manley’s case, the versatile freestyler clocked 1:51.00 in the long-course version of the 200 free to slash .38 off his former record, set in 2004. Manley’s performance was good for a fourth-place finish and qualified him for the European Championships this summer. As for Murphy, he crushed the 50 free record with a time of 22.90, good for victory. The previous Irish record was 23.36, set by Nick O’Hare in 1996. Murphy also narrowly missed the Irish record in the 100 free with a time of 50.93. The record of 50.91 has stood since 1995, when Earl McCarthy posted the time.
