The Louisville Cardinals got their 2022-23 swim season underway Friday with a dual meet against Xavier, and both of Arthur Albiero’s squads cruised to easy victories. The Louisville men won 169-89, while the Louisville women came out on top 181-78 behind an impressive performance from freshman Paige Kuwata.

Kuwata, who arrived at Louisville from the Sandpipers of Nevada, pulled off a grueling triple in her first college meet. Kuwata won the 1000 free by more than 40 seconds in 9:54.15, and soon after, she cruised to a win in the 200 fly in 2:02.58. Finally, she scored a win in the 500 free in 4:53.47, almost 22 seconds ahead of the field. Also winning three events for Louisville was junior Tristen Ulett, who won the 100 back over younger sister Rye in 56.41. She later won the 100 free (51.09) and 200 IM (2:04.94).

Paige Hetrick was the winner in the 200 free (1:51.04) and 200 back (2:03.22), while freshman Cecilia Viberg swept the 100 breast (1:03.07) and 200 breast (2:20.92). Christiana Regenauer took the 50 free in 23.07, while Gabi Albiero, competing for the first time since making the trip to Australia to compete with the U.S. team at the Duel in the Pool, won the 100 fly in 53.36. In the 200 medley relay, Abby Hay, Viberg, Regenauer and Julia Dennis led a 1-2-3 Louisville sweep with a time of 1:41.69, and the Cardinal women concluded the meet with a 400 free relay win. Regenauer, Dennis, Fernanda Gomes Celidonio and Kuwata combined for a time of 3:26.42.

The Louisville men had three swimmers securing two wins apiece. Ilia Sibirtsev took first in the 1000 free (9:17.52) and 500 free (4:31.26), and Denis Petrashov was the top breaststroker of the day with wins in the 100 (56.24) and 200 (2:03.19). Haridi El-Araby led the way in the 50 free (20.01) and 100 free (44.61). Charlie Crush, Petrashov, El-Araby and Michael Eastman took first in the 200 medley relay in 1:29.13, and the meet ended with Murilo Sartori, El-Araby, Caleb Duncan and Jacob Pishko winning the 400 free relay in 3:02.65.
