Pac-12 Women’s Championships, Night Three Finals: Cal’s Isabel Ivey Completes Fly/Back Double

Day Three Finals, Houston Texas

The third night of the Pac-12 Conference Championships featured Stanford trying to retain its lead in the team standings over Cal, with each team turning to one of its stars for double duty. While Stanford’s Brooke Forde tackled the 400 individual medley and 200 freestyle, Cal’s Isabel Ivey was busy in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. When the evening was over, Stanford was in front of Cal, 1091-1074.5, a tight race that will make for a dramatic final night.

Here is a look at how the action unfolded on Friday night.

400 Individual Medley

A leading contender to qualify for the Olympic Games in the event, Stanford’s Brooke Forde had no trouble topping the field and earning a second individual win of the meet. Already the winner of the 500 freestyle, the U.S. National Team member prevailed in the 400 IM in 4:02.57, with Cal’s Alicia Wilson following for the silver medal in 4:04.22.

For Forde, the 400 medley was the front half of a difficult double, with the back end being the 200 freestyle. The defending champion, Forde narrowly trailed Wilson through the butterfly and backstroke legs, but took command – as expected – on the breaststroke leg. Forde then extended her advantage on the freestyle leg to win comfortably.

While Forde scored 32 points via her first-place finish, Stanford got much more from the event as Hannah Kukurugya (4:08.70) and Isabel Gormley (4:12.16) were third and fifth, respectively. Finishing between the Stanford swimmers was USC’s Isabelle Odgers, who earned fourth in 4:09.99. Stanford also benefited from Katie Glavinovich finishing seventh.

100 Butterfly

For the first two days of the Pac-12 Championships, Isabel Ivey was limited to relay duty as she waited for the opportunity to start her individual program. When Ivey got that chance on Friday, she put together a convincing triumph in the 100 fly. Registering a time of 50.87, Ivey easily got to the wall ahead of UCLA’s Sam Baron, the runnerup in 51.65.

Before her fly crown, Ivey had helped Cal to a pair of relay victories, but in the quest to catch Stanford in the team standings, there was no doubt Ivey needed to flourish in her solo events. Ivey was supported in the 100 fly by teammate Rachel Klinker, who took third in 51.79. Like Forde, Ivey facd a difficult double on Night Three, as the 100 backstroke awaited the junior later in the session.

200 Freestyle

When Cal won the 800 freestyle relay on the first night of the meet, Robin Neumann led off for the Bears with the best time in the event. So, it wasn’t a surprise to see the senior take the individual title in the 200 free, a 1:43.40 effort getting the job done. Making Neumann’s triumph even more satisfying for Cal was the fact that she was followed to the wall by teammate Ayla Spitz, who covered her eight laps in 1:44.10. Cal also received scoring from Eloise Riley and Emily Gantriis in sixth and seventh.

Stanford senior Brooke Forde completed her double with a third-place finish. Coming off a win in the 400 medley to start the night, Forde posted a time of 1:44.39. Forde’s performances accounted for 59 points for the Cardinal, and her willingness to take on this type of double only spoke to the guts Forde brings to the pool. She was followed in fourth place by teammate Morgan Tankersley (1:44.63).

100 Breaststroke

Back when she committed to Southern California as a high school standout from Oregon, Kaitlyn Dobler figured to claim a Pac-12 Conference championship – and maybe more. While an NCAA title might be attainable next month, Dobler can now call herself a Pac-12 champion after winning the 100 breaststroke in 57.85. Dobler was consistent with her swims, as she posted a 57.80 effort in the prelims.

Cal’s Ema Rajic clocked in at 58.45 for second place and Allie Raab of Stanford was the third-place finisher with a time of 58.74. The Cal-Stanford battle continued throughout the final, with the Cardinal seeing Zoe Bartel and Grace Zhao finish fifth and seventh, and Cal receiving a sixth-place showing from Ali Harrison.

100 Backstroke

Throughout the COVID-19 affected regular season, Isabel Ivey routinely supplied Cal with impressive performances across a variety of events. In her biggest meet of the season to date, the junior was superb as she completed her 100 butterfly-100 backstroke double. With the 100 fly already won, Ivey posted a time of 51.13 to win the 100 back and lead Cal swimmers in three of the top-four positions.

Ivey narrowly touched in front of teammate Isabelle Stadden, who was closing at the finish and ended up with a mark of 51.17, just .04 back of Ivey. Tea Laughlin went 52.51 for fourth place and the Bears narrowed their deficit in the team standings to 24.5 points.

Stanford’s Alex Crisera went 52.38 to take third place and Janelle Rudolph was fifth for the Cardinal.

200 Medley Relay

Cal claimed its fourth relay victory in as many attempts as the foursome of Isabelle Stadden, Ema Rajic, Isabel Ivey and Emily Gantriis combined for a time of 1:35.18 to edge Stanford, which was timed in 1:35.52. The Cardinal quartet consisted of Alex Crisera, Allie Raab, Emma Wheal and Amalie Fackenthal.

Stadden’s leadoff backstroke leg of 24.29 proved to be the deciding factor, as that effort staked the Bear to almost a half-second advantage. By winning the 200 medley relay, Cal pulled to within 16.5 points in the team standings, setting up a final-dat showdown on Saturday.
