Pac-12 Day 2 Prelims: Torri Huske, Taylor Ruck Take 1-3 Seeds in 50 Free; Curzan Exhibitions

The 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Championships continued with the Day 2 prelims on Thursday from Federal Way, Wash.

The morning session consisted of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle.

Here is a look at the day-two action:

Pac-12 Women’s 500 Free

Just two hundredths of a second separated the top two qualifiers in the 500 free to start the first prelims session of the meet.

Cal senior Ayla Spitz got to the wall first in 4:40.93, just ahead of Stanford sophomore Aurora Roghair (4:40.95).

Arizona State senior Lindsay Looney took the third seed in 4:41/03, just ahead of Cal senior Mia Motekaitis (4:41.11) and fellow Arizona State senior Molly Batchelor (4:41.82).

The last three finals spots were taken by Stanford swimmers as senior Morgan Tankersley was sixth (4:42.92), followed by freshmen Kayla Wilson (4:43.10) and Natalie Mannion (4:43.38).

Pac-12 Women’s 200 IM

The 200 IM was the anticipated Isabelle show. Cal junior Isabelle Stadden and USC senior Isabelle Odgers were about three tenths of a second apart during th prelims to take the top two seeds in the event for tonight’s final.

Stadden got to the wall in 1:56.08 to finish ahead of Odgers (1:56.41).

Stanford freshman Lucy Bell took the third seed in 1:56.57, one of three Stanford freshman in the finals – Gigi Johnson (1:58.11) and Charlotte Hook (1:58.14).

Cal sophomore Leah Polonsky was fourth (1:57.05) ahead of USC freshman Justina Kozan (1:57.56).

Pac-12 Women’s 50 Free

Stanford sophomore Torri Huske claimed the top seed in the 50 free in 21.67.

Meanwhile, teammate Claire Curzan went a 21.90 but was exhibition so she can swim other events and score.

USC junior Hanna Henderson claimed the second seed in 22.13 to finish just ahead of Stanford senior Taylor Ruck (22.17), leading a speed-packed final.

UCLA senior Claire Grover took the fourth seed in 22.22, ahead of USC junior Anicka Delgado (22.26).

Cal sophomore Stephanie Akakabota was sixth (22.33), followed by UCLA’s Rachel Rhee (22.38), Stanford sophomore Amy Tang (22.41) and Cal junior Emily Gantriss (22.41), who tied for eighth.
