Olympic Diving: Canadian Teenager Leads Men’s Springboard Qualifying Round

ATHENS, August 23. ALEXANDRE Despatie, a nineteen year old Canadian platform specialist, absolutely sparkled to lead all qualifiers in the preliminary round of the 3-meter springboard diving, which cut the field to 18 for the next round.

The 5’6” youngster was the only competitor scoring over 500 points. He had the highest score on four of the six dives and second-highest on a fifth.

Others in the medal positions after the preliminaries were Bo Peng of China and Russia’s Alexander Dobroskok.

America’s top performer was Troy Dumais in fifth spot. The USA’s other entry, Justin Wilcock, failed to advance.

The semifinal round, which will cut the field to 12 and provide scores from several dives to the finals scoring, is in progress at this time. Finals are scheduled for 9:45 p.m., Athens time today, August 24, 2004.
