Oklahoma 5A State Record Holder Hanna Newby Sends Verbal to Auburn
NEW COMMIT: Guthrie, Okla. native Hanna Newby has verbally committed to Auburn University as a member of the class of 2023.
Newby does her club swimming with American Energy Swim Club and is a U.S. Open qualifier in the 100 breast with a Nationals cut in the 200 breast. She concluded her long course season with three lifetime bests and two finals appearances at Junior Nationals after winning the 100m breast at Jenks Speedo Sectionals. At Winter Juniors West in December, she placed seventh in both breaststroke distances and won the shorter of the two races at Columbia Speedo Sectionals in March.
Also representing Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, Newby has won the 100 breast and 200 IM at the OSSAA Class 5A State Championships in each of her three high school swim seasons thus far and will aim to four-peat as a senior. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American first broke the Oklahoma 5A records in both events as a freshman and has lowered them every year since.
She told Swimming World:
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Auburn University. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me in both my collegiate studies and swimming at Auburn. I look forward to being part of the Auburn family. #WDE!”
Her best times include:
- 100 breast – 1:01.16
- 200 breast – 2:12.25
- 200 IM – 2:01.46
- 400 IM – 4:20.36
Newby will make an immediate impact for the Tigers when she arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season. Her best 100 and 200 breast times would’ve ranked second and third, respectively, on Auburn’s lineup last season and she would’ve scored in both distances at the 2018 SEC Championships.
