NEW COMMIT: The Ohio State University has earned a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from Kyra Sommerstad of Port Jefferson, N.Y.

Sommerstad, who swims year-round with Three Village Swim Club, owns three U.S. Open standards and recently won the 200 back with a runner-up finish in the 400 IM at Ithaca Speedo Sectionals. She raced four events at Juniors East in December and grabbed bronze in the 400 IM at Metropolitan SCY Seniors in February. Last summer, she earned silver medals in the 100m back, 200m back and 200m IM at Metropolitan LCM Seniors before going on to win both backstrokes as well as the 400m IM at Eastern Zone Seniors.

Also competing for Port Jefferson High School, Sommerstad is a six-time New York Federation Championship finalist. She won the 200 IM and raced to second in the 100 back as a junior after placing fifth and sixth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season. She has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts.

She told Swimming World:

“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at The Ohio State University.  I am so grateful for the opportunity to join this amazing team.  OSU has so much to offer and provides the best resources for me to grow and contribute as a student athlete. Thank you to my family, coaches and friends for all the encouragement and amazing support! GO BUCKS!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 back – 26.30
  • 100 back – 54.74
  • 200 back – 1:58.09
  • 200 IM – 2:02.72
  • 400 IM – 4:19.88

Even with over a year to go before suiting up for the Buckeyes as a member of the class of 2024, Sommerstad will add valuable backstroke and IM depth to Ohio State’s lineup. She would’ve scored in the C-final of the 200 back at the 2019 Big Ten Championships and is just on the edge of scoring range in a few other events at the conference level.
