NEW COMMIT: Henrico, Va. sprinter Sydney Whiting has declared her verbal commitment to Notre Dame and will join the Fighting Irish for the 2020-21 season.

Whiting, who owns a pair of U.S. Open standards, does her club swimming with NOVA of Virginia Aquatics and is primarily a sprint freestyler. She recently placed 14th in the 100 free and 15th in the 200 free at Juniors East in December, achieving a best time in the former. She capped off her summer long course season with a second-place finish in the 200m free and a fourth-place showing in the 100m free at NCSAs after recording four lifetime bests at Virginia LCM Seniors.

Also competing for Trinity Episcopal School, Whiting is a four-time Virginia Ind. Schools State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 50 free and raced to second in the 100 free as a sophomore after placing fifth and fourth, respectively, in those events during her freshman season.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m beyond grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at the University of Notre Dame. Thank you to my family, friends, and coaches who have supported me along my journey. Can’t wait to be apart of the Notre Dame family. Go Irish!!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 23.65
  • 100 free – 50.15
  • 200 free – 1:48.63
  • 50m free – 26.93
  • 100m free – 56.70
  • 200m free – 2:02.97

Although she’s not in scoring range just yet at the ACC Championships, Whiting has made significant improvements each season with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Irish. Over the past three seasons, she has dropped just over a second in her 50 free, two seconds in the 100 free and five in the 200 free.
