Notre Dame Men Win Twice in Battle with Tampa, Minnesota

The University of Notre Dame used its training trip to Florida to sneak in a meet, picking up a pair of wins over Minnesota and the University of Tampa on Saturday.

Minnesota’s women’s team defeated Tampa, 186-76, at Tampa’s Riseman Aquatic Center. Notre Dame’s women’s team took part in a separate meet in Florida.

Notre Dame used its sprint depth on the men’s side. It bookended the triumphs with relay wins, with Shane Eckler and Marcus Reyes-Gentry on both the 200 medley relay that went 1:26.89 and the 200 freestyle squad that went 1:20.11.

Eckler anchored the former in 19.26 and led off the latter in 20.18. Eckler won the 50 free in 19.91 and the 100 free in 44.42.

Reyes-Gentry led a 1-2-3 in the 100 back, his time of 46.22 leading teammates Tommy Janton and Zack Oswald to the wall. Oswald won the 200 back in 1:46.78, edging the Minnesota duo of Ethan Kosin and Ryan Slonac by .08 and .18, respectively. Reyes-Gentry finished second in the 100 fly.

Jack Armour nearly pulled a triple for the Irish. The breaststroker on the winning medley relay, he claimed the 100 breast in 54.65, took the 200 in 1:57.67 and finished second in the 200 individual medley. Teammate Jeremy Kelly, who won the 200 free, was third in the 200 IM.

Jacob Johnson pulled out two wins for Minnesota. He went 1:44.00 to win his signature event in the 200 fly. He added a time of 47.11 to win the 100 fly.

Joe Polyak had a fascinating meet, winning the 200 IM in 1:48.43 after finishing third in the 1,000 free and second in the 200 breast. Daniel Eichel won the 500 free in 4:24.67 after having finished second in the 200 free. Second to him in the 500 was 1,000 free runner-up Luke Brennan.

Tampa more than held its own. The Division II power got a win from Jacob Hamlin in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:07.64. He was also third in the 500 free. Tibor Tistan and Riccardo Pandin were 2-3 in the 50 free. Pandin was second in the 100 free with teammate Nick Cavic third, while Cavic was also third in the 200 fly.

On the women’s side, the Golden Gophers’ triumph was paved by its sprint depth. Morgan Thomas led a 1-2-3 in the 50 free with her winning time of 22.81. Second was Livi Wanner, who was also second in the 100 free. The win in the 100 went to Mina Kaljevic (50.47), doubling up on her win in the 200 free over sister Anja Kaljevic, who was third in the 500 free.

Thomas also won the 100 fly in 52.90. Wanner and Thomas were on both winning relays.

Ava Yablonski did the backstroke double. Katie McCarthy claimed the 500 free and 1,000 free. Rachel Conley claimed the 200 fly and was third in the 100 fly.

All three of Tampa’s wins came from Caroline Foltz. She went 1:03.30 to win the 100 breast, 2:14.64 to claim the 200 breast and 2:03.75 to hold off McCarthy for the win in the 200 IM.
