MARQUETTE, Michigan, September 26. Northern Michigan University’s board of trustees approved the addition of men’s swimming and diving, along with women’s golf, men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse, in the 2015 and 2016 seasons according to a report by The North Wind.
“We have an opportunity to bring in at least 90 more students in the next two years with the additions,” NMU President Fritz Erickson told The North Wind. “It really makes sense for us to do swimming and golf first. We have wonderful coaches that are excited for it. With these new additions, we really don’t have as much added weight in facilities. So this really uses many of our current resources to their fullest potential. This is an opportunity to add more students without a ton of extra costs.”
Men’s swimming had previously been cut from NMU’s offerings back in 1980, but as detailed by Erickson, bringing back men’s swimming is not a huge expense considering there is already a women’s swimming and diving program currently in place under head coach Heidi Voigt with facility costs already being considered sunk.
