NEW COMMIT: Northeastern University has earned their first verbal commitment for the class of 2024 from Mission Viejo, Calif. native Marybeth Johnson. She will make the move across the county to Boston next fall.

Johnson swims year-round with Mission Viejo Nadadores and capped off her summer season with five races at Santa Clara Futures. She recorded a best time at TYR Pro Swim Series – Atlanta and placed 14th in the Perry Senior Invite last fall. Also competing for Trabuco Hills High School, Johnson finished 17th in the 500 free at CIF-Southern Sections during her junior season after placing eighth in the event as a sophomore.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at Northeastern University! I chose Northeastern because of the incredible combination of academic and athletic opportunities. I am so excited to be a part of the team and grow with the help of the Coach Coates and Coach Rapp. I really want to thank my family, my friends, the Nadadores and coaches. Go Huskies!!”

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:52.32
  • 500 free – 4:59.41
  • 100 back – 58.09
  • 200 fly – 2:03.52

When she suits up for the Huskies at the start of the 2019-20 season, Johnson’s versatility will join a mid-distance free group led by Megan Clark, a fly group that includes Kelly Cheng and a backstroke squad with Sidney Smith. Her best times would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200 free, 500 free and 200 fly at the 2018 CAA Championships where Northeastern finished fourth overall in the team standings.
