North Dakota Boys High School State Championships

MANDAN, North Dakota, March 9. MINOT won the state title at the North Dakota Boys High School State Championships with 377 points while West Fargo took second (362) and Mandan placed third (283).

Minot’s Kalvin Brown, Brandon Hamel, Joe Burns, and Alex Lucy won the 200 medley relay (1:39.94). Hamel also won the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:48.69.

Jake Weible (West Fargo) was a dual event winner in the 100 freestyle (47.92) and the 100 backstroke. He set a state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.02. The previous record (53.15) was set by Matt Bonzer in 2003.

Mandan’s Devin Aune set a state record in the diving competition with a score of 484.00. The previous record (468.85) was set by Joseph Parrish in 2000. Jordan Barth (Mandan) and Andrew Wangler (Bismarck) followed with scores of 471.20 and 420.35, respectively.

Joey Rasmus, Jake Reopelle, Michael Duncan, and Matt Stiner (Fargo South) won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:30.06.

Other first-place finishers include Obi Obembe (Fargo North) in the 200 IM (2:01.24), Issac Loegering (Grand Forks) in the 50 freestyle (22.14), Ian Ballantyne (Bismarck) in the 100 butterfly (52.65), Ethan Doll (West Fargo) in the 500 freestyle (4:56.09), and Sam Ellison (Mandan) in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.05).

Adam Smestad, Jared Sykora, Daniel Hulbert, and Weible closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.19).
