North Carolina State Champ Liam Drake Hands 2027 Verbal to Georgia Tech

NEW COMMIT: Georgia Tech has picked up a new verbal commitment for the 2027-28 season and beyond from Liam Drake of Apex, North Carolina. Drake is a talented distance freestyler and Junior National qualifier.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I am incredibly blessed to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Georgia Tech! I want to thank my friends, family, Coach Ethan, Coach Jenni and all of RSA for helping me get to where I am today. I’d also like to thank Coach John, Coach Iago, and all the GT staff for this amazing opportunity! Go Jackets!”

Drake, who trains year-round with Raleigh Swimming Association, most recently won the 500 free and the mile at Southeastern Meet of Champions earlier this month. He had a great showing at North Carolina Seniors in February, winning the 1000 free and 1650 free while taking second in the 500 free and third in the 200 free. Drake also took seventh in the mile, eighth in the 1000 free and 10th in the 500 free at Juniors East.

Last summer, Drake finished third in the 800m free at North Carolina Long Course Seniors before going on to race five events at Junior Nationals.

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:38.72
  • 500 free – 4:22.21
  • 1000 free – 8:59.70
  • 1650 free – 15:09.59

Currently a junior at Cardinal Gibbons High School, Drake won the 500 free at North Carolina 7A State Championships where he also took fourth in the 200 free and helped his team win the 4×100 free relay. He took third in the 500 free and 10th in the 200 free at the state meet as a sophomore.

Drake is a great pickup for the Yellow Jackets. His best time in the 1000 free would already rank first on their roster this year, and his mile would rank second and his 500 free would rank third.
