NEW COMMIT: Potomac, Md. backstroker Noah Rutberg has verbally committed to the University of North Carolina and will join the Tar Heels in the fall of 2020.

Rutberg, who owns three U.S. Open standards, swims year-round with Nation’s Capital Swim Club under the legendary Bruce Gemmell. He capped off a successful long course season by winning the 200m back at NCSAs this past summer where he recorded six best times. Last winter, he was the 200 back runner-up at the Potomac Valley SCY Championships before going on to race seven events at NCSAs.

Also competing for Winston Churchill High School, Rutberg is a five-time Maryland 3A/4A State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American earned gold in the 100 back and bronze in the 200 IM as a junior after racing to second and eighth, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.

His best times include:

  • 50 back – 24.63
  • 100 back – 49.77
  • 200 back – 1:48.12
  • 200 IM – 1:52.23
  • 400 IM – 4:05.67

Rutberg will add valuable depth to the Tar Heels’ lineup when he arrives in Chapel Hill as a member of the class of 2024. He’s just on the brink of scoring range at the ACC Championships and will have one year of overlap with Christopher Thames. He’ll also join Boyd Poelke next year.
