New Mexico High School State Championships

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico, February 25. ALBUQUERQUE Academy walked away with two state titles at the New Mexico High School State Championships. On the girls’ side, Albuquerque Academy tallied 334.50 points for first, Los Alamos took second (268), and La Cueva and Las Cruces tied for third (256). The Albuquerque Academy boys won with 288 points followed by Eldorado (253) and Las Cruces (219.50).

Girls Results
The foursome of Anikia Apostalon, Tess Lemon, Michelle Howell, and Marissa Hollowwa (Albuquerque Academy) won the 200 medley relay (1:47.90) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.81).

Sophomore Samantha Harding (Las Cruces) was a dual event winner in the 200 (1:54.66) and 500 (5:03.98) freestyles.

Albuquerque’s Madison Bridges had individual wins in the 200 IM (2:04.95) and the 100 backstroke. She set a state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.85. The previous record (55.19) was set by La Cueva’s Jennifer Hommert in 1995.

Rachel Dixon (Las Cruces) won the sprint races. She clocked times of 23.17 (50 freestyle) and 51.48 (100 freestyle). She surpassed the previous state record in the 50 freestyle (23.67) set by Candace Sisouvanieng-Kim (Albuquerque Academy) in 2007.

Manzano’s Courtney Brooks won the diving competition with a score of 381.45. St. Michael’s Laura Lee Thomas and Rio Rancho’s Shannon Gonzales followed with scores of 357.25 and 336.55, respectively.

Jorgi Hobson won the 100 butterfly in 57.42. She teamed up with Harding, Moranda Madero and Dixon for a first-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:34.20).

Boys Results
Eldorado won two of three relays. Ian Walker, Igor Goulart, Tristan Bennett, and Henry Homans won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:38.89.

Albuquerque’s Jacob Mortensen was a dual event winner in the 200 IM (1:55.21) and the 100 backstroke. He set a state record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.69. The previous record (50.94) was set by Robert Schelling (Sandia Prep) in 2002.

Senior Drew Sacoman (Sandia) had individual wins in the 200 (1:45.80) and 100 (47.60) freestyles.

Tim Zoltowski (Rio Rancho) won the 50 freestyle in 21.36. He teamed up with Jake Pyeatt, Tyler Romero and Ryan Lewis for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.70).

Top finishers in the diving competition include Kyle Lang (Albuquerque Academy) (428.55), Niko Dellios (Albuquerque Academy) (361.50), and Stuart Sproul (Desert Academy) (345.20).

Bennett, Walker, Jonah Hanks, and Homans closed the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:17.41).
