NEW COMMIT: Ashburn, Va. native and high school junior Abby Harter has announced her in-state verbal to the University of Virginia as a member of the class of 2024.

Harter does her club swimming with Nation’s Capital and is a four-time U.S. Open qualifier. She placed fourth in the 200m fly at Juniors this past summer after racing both fly events at Nationals. She placed third in the 100 and 200 fly at NCSAs in March with four additional finals appearances and was a seven-time finalist at the 2017 NCSA Spring Championships.

Also representing Briar Woods High School, Harter is a four-time Virginia 5A State Championship finalist. She won the 100 breast and was the 200 IM runner-up as a sophomore after winning the 200 IM and placing second in the 100 fly during her inaugural season. Harter has also earned NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for her efforts.

She told Swimming World:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Virginia in the fall of 2020! Thank you to my family, coaches, friends and teammates for their support. I can not wait to be a part of the amazing energy on deck that Coach DeSorbo and his staff have put together! It is contagious!”

Her best times include:

  • 100 fly – 53.51
  • 200 fly – 1:56.04
  • 100 breast – 1:01.25
  • 200 breast – 2:13.67
  • 200 IM – 2:00.26
  • 400 IM – 4:14.88

Even with just under two years of club swimming still to go, Harter will make an immediate impact when she arrives in Charlottesville in the fall of 2020. She would’ve scored in the A-final of the 200 fly, the B-final of the 400 IM, both breaststrokes and 100 fly as well as the C-final of the 200 IM at the 2018 ACC Championships. In his first year at the helm of Virginia’s program, head coach Todd DeSorbo led the Hoos to their 15th conference title in school history last season.
