NCAA Men’s Weekend Preview

By Dave Denniston

CARLSBAD, California, January 12. SEVERAL teams are meeting head-to-head en route to the Dallas Morning News invitational. Auburn vs. Texas will be the top meet of the weekend, promising some very fast times.

1. Auburn: The Tigers travel to Austin, Texas this weekend to take on the sixth-ranked Longhorns. This will be Auburn’s toughest dual meet this season in quest for a fourth national championship in a row. Look for some close races and some new faces in this weekends top matchup.

2. Cal-Berkeley: The Bears have moved up to No. 2 in the rankings, and are preparing for big meet competition with the Cal Invitational being held at home. Coming off of its Holiday training, Cal will compete on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

3. Stanford: The Cardinal will have their noses buried in the books this weekend, as they won’t be competing against anyone.

4. Michigan: After the emotional loss of Michigan Olympian, Eric Namesnik, the Wolverines are postponing their trip to Indiana where they would have competed against the Hoosiers on Saturday. Michigan remains scheduled to swim Purdue on Friday. The Hoosier dual meet is rescheduled for January 29th.

5. Arizona: After beating Washington last weekend, the Wildcats are taking this weekend off.

6. Texas: The Longhorns welcome #1 Auburn to Austin. Rankings aside, this rivalry is all about pride and swimming fast.

7. Florida: The Gators are stopping at LSU on Friday en route to the Dallas Morning News Classic. Florida will be showcasing some new talent and sharpening up for championship meets this weekend in Dallas.

8. Minnesota: Tempe, Arizona isn’t a bad place for a dual meet, especially when you deal with snow this time of year. The Gophers are gearing up to take on the Arizona State in what should be a close competition.

9. Southern California: The Trojans are hitting up some tri-meet action as they take on Cal State Bakersfield and Pacific on Saturday. With Larsen Jenson back in action, look for some blazing fast distance events.

10. Tennesse: Virginia will be welcoming the Volunteers to Charlottesville this weekend. #13 Virginia’s top notch IM and breaststroke crew will be out to topple the Vols in their own pool.
