NCAA Division III Championships, Night 3 Finals: Kate Augustyn Sets 100 Back Record

NCAA Division III Championships, Night 3 Finals: Kate Augustyn Sets 100 Back Record
There was no shortage of intrigue on the third night of the NCAA Division III Championships Friday. There is plenty of drama heading into a final day in which the top two women’s teams are separated by three points.
But as significant as all of that was the swim by Kate Augustyn, the MIT junior matching her NCAA record in the women’s 100 backstroke with a time of 53.41 seconds. She had gone that same exact time off the front of the 400 medley relay a night earlier.

Frank Applebaum’s quest for a third straight title was spoiled by last year’s runner-up. Justin Finkel of Connecticut College delivered a savage final 50 to take the title away from Applebaum by .18 seconds. Finkel went 1:43.21, an NCAA record, taking down Applebaum’s mark. He finished in 26.82 to close a gap of more than a second after 150 yards, Applebaum second in 1:43.39.
Applebaum, a junior from Claremont Mudd Scripps, had set NCAA records of 1:44.01 and 1:43.96 the last two years. Finkel was second in 1:44.32 last year.
The top four are the same as last year, though the order is jumbled. Avery Clapp of Johns Hopkins went from fourth to third in 1:44.56. That came at the expense of last year’s bronze medalist, Chicago’s Jesse Ssengonzi, who was fourth in 1:44.93. Teammate Cooper Costello was fifth, the Maroons hopping to second in the team standings. Emory stayed in front with Harris Thorsen sixth and Benjamin Thorsen eighth.

Caitlin Marshall is back on top of the 200 fly after finishing as the runner-up last year. The NYU junior went 1:58.50, seven tenths quicker than her winning time in 2022. She was a second ahead of last year’s winner, Chicago’s Alesha Kelly, after 100 meters and held that edge to the end. Kelly was second in 1:59.62. Denison’s Emily Harris took bronze in 2:00.03.
NYU put three in the top five, Nicole Ranile and Reina Gomez following. Youngju Baik was eighth. It moved the Violets into second place in the team standings.

One of the oldest records on the books now belongs to Kate Augustyn. The MIT junior went 53.41 to best the field by .43 seconds. Her time erased the 2013 standard set by Kenyon’s Celia Oberholzer at 53.46. Augustyn had gone 53.41 a night earlier in the 400 medley relay, with MIT placing third.
Williams’ Sophia Verkleeren was second in 53.87. Sammi Theile of Austin finished third in 54.73. Behind her was Emory senior Megan Jungers in 54.80. Jungers was second each of the last two years.
Augustyn was third in the event last year. She opted for the 200 back and two individual medleys as a freshman.

Women’s 800 freestyle relay
The top three in the team standings were the top three in the 800 free relay, and with one day left, one three points separate one and two.
That’s Kenyon, third in the 800 free relay, with 315 points, three ahead of Denison. Denison cut into that edge by finishing second in the 800 free relay. Not yet out of the picture is the relay winner NYU, which won this race in 7:16.20. The Violets trailed at the midway point before Caitlin Marshall and 200 free champ Kaley McIntyre turned into a romp by 3.2 seconds over Denison’s 7:19.60. Nicole Ranile and Aanya Wala started NYU’s relay.
Kenyon went 7:21.28. Emory was fourth in 7:22.95.
