NCAA Division III Championships, Night 1: Kaley McIntyre, Derek Maas Set NCAA Records

NYU had a fast opening night of the NCAA Division III Championships, setting the two NCAA records of the first night session at Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Derek Maas unseated two-time NCAA champion Garrett Clasen to win the 200 IM and down a national record belonging to Andrew Wilson. Kaley McIntyre became the fastest sprinter in Division III history with her win in the 50 free.

After one night, NYU’s men’s team is on top with Denison leading the women’s meet.

Men’s 500 freestyle

Justin Finkel and Samuel Dienstag separated from the pack early, and the sophomore from Brandeis led by nearly two seconds at the 400-yard wall. But Finkel closed hard, in 26.05 and 24.54, to gouge more than two seconds out of Dienstag and win in 4:21.32. The Connecticut College junior was second last year.

Dienstag, who was 13th last year, came home in 53.06. He coasted to silver in 4:21.86.

Bronze went to NYU’s Connor Vincent in 4:24.58. He was well clear of Kellen Roddy, who bumps up from fifth each of the last two years to fourth for Johns Hopkins. Vincent was ninth last year.

Women’s 500 freestyle

There was a freshman party-crasher in the women’s 500. Kenyon rookie Bengisu Caymaz was fifth in the morning by more than 5.5 seconds faster at night to steal away with the win in 4:48.65. She was second at the 400-yard mark before surging back NYU’s Caitlin Marshall in the final 100. Marshall was the clear choice for second in 4:49.46.

Denison’s Tara Witkowski was third for the third straight year with at time of 4:51.10. Amherst freshman Maeve Kelley finished fourth.

Last year’s champion, Kristin Cornish of Johns Hopkins, was 1.3 seconds slower than prelims to finish eighth in the final in 4:55.90. The 2022 champion, Taryn Wisner, was quicker in finishing second in the B final for 10th after she had been 15th in the morning. Wisner went 4:54.60.

Men’s 200 individual medley

Garrett Clasen’s two-year run as the NCAA champion in the 200 IM ended at the hands of Derek Maas, and emphatically so. The grad transfer from the University of Alabama went 1:42.97, obliterating the 2017 NCAA record set by Emory’s Andrew Wilson at 1:44.18. Maas, whose best time at Alabama was a school-record 1:42.59, helped Division III skip 1:43 altogether.

Clasen had no answer, the University of Chicago senior adding a silver medal in 1:45.23. Carnegie Mellon freshman Brayden Morford was second in 1:46.51. Olivier Schalet of Williams finished fourth for the second straight year. Last year’s bronze medalist, Alex McCormick of Washington University, dropped to fifth in 1:47.01.

Women’s 200 individual medley

Make it two titles in a row for Williams’ Sophia Verkleeren, the junior going 1:59.59 to win by nearly a second. Verkleeren won in 1:59.47 last year. She was eight tenths clear at the midpoint and coasted from there. Verkleeren was fourth as a freshman.

The runner-up is Hope’s Greta Gidley for a second straight year. She went 2:00.45 to be a full second ahead of Kenyon junior Jennah Fadely. Sammi Theil of Austin was fourth, .05 ahead of MIT’s Kate Augustyn. It’s the third straight top-10 finish for Augustyn, a junior.

Men’s 50 freestyle

Fastest in the morning at 19.66 seconds, MIT senior Tobe Obochi perfectly matched that time at night to win gold. He was .03 seconds ahead of Djordje Dragojlovic, who grabbed silver in 19.69. He had tied for fifth last year.

Emory’s Nicholas Goudie is third for the second straight year, having gone 19.78. He was the silver medalist in 2022. The swimmer he was tied with for bronze last year, James McChesney of TCNJ, wasn’t far away, in fourth in 19.82.

St. Mary’s James Schwenk (19.83) and Nathaniel Taft of Hamilton (19.96) made six swimmers under 20 seconds.

Women’s 50 freestyle

Kaley McIntyre completed the 50 free repeat, the NYU sophomore adding a national record to boot. She went 22.46 seconds, .32 quicker than the 22.78 she used to win last year. It also clipped .02 seconds off the national record set in 2018 by Fiona Muir of Emory.

Alex Turvey of Pomona-Pitzer, the top seed from the morning, held on for second in 22.58. She was 10th last year. Hannah Fathman of Albion was quicker than prelims to finish third in 22.85, and MIT freshman Ella Roberson added bronze via a spot in the sub-23 club in 22.97.

Men’s 3-meter diving

Israel Zavaleta is the 3-meter champion for a third straight year, the Mexican international claiming his fifth overall NCAA title. Zavaleta scored 606.65 to put a scare into the meet record and was well clear of the field.

Second was SUNY Geneseo’s Trent Makowiec with a score of 552.85. Avery Balch had been second in prelims but ended up third in finals at 546.45. Centre’s Rowan Fitzsimmons was fourth.

Men’s 200 medley relay

Emory claimed the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:26.14. Ryan Soh, Jake Meyer, Jeff Echols and Caden Bjornstad gave the Eagles’ title hopes a shot in the arm. The middle two legs got the job done, Meyer splitting a race-best 23.40 and Echols at 20.94, second quickest in the race.

NYU was second, with Derek Maas giving them clean water with a 21.54 split out front. Greg Wehbe came home in 19.38, helping NYU separate from a crowd of five teams separated by four tenths at 150 yards. Jesse Ssengonzi’s 20.81 fly split helped Chicago finish third, .02 ahead of Kenyon.

MIT finished the night with a victory in 1:39.67, Kate Augustyn, Edenna Chen, Annika Naveen and Ella Roberson comprising the quartet. Denison was second in 1:40.40, followed by Williams. Tufts edged Kenyon by .05 for fourth.
