NCAA Division II Championships, Night 3 Finals: Records Falling as Nova, Tampa Stalk Team Titles

The Nova Southeastern women are looking strong in pursuit of a second consecutive title at the NCAA Division II Championships in Geneva, Ohio. A lead of 30.5 points after Wednesday evening’s finals session now sits at 50.5 points, largely thanks to a second individual title this week for Emily Trieschmann, who added the 200 freestyle national crown to her earlier win in the 1000 free. Teammate Rafaela Raurich was also an individual winner on night three.

On the men’s side, meanwhile, Tampa extended its lead to 48 points in hopes of winning the school’s first-ever team title. In addition to Trieschmann, individual medley swimmers Benedict Nagy (women’s) and Benjamin Sampson (men’s), both of Colorado Mesa, added 400 IM wins to their earlier titles in the 200 IM. Sampson and Indy’s Cedric Buessing went head-to-head in a thrilling 400 IM final that came down to one hundredth, with both men shattering the national record in the event. A national record also fell in the men’s 400 medley relay.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Nova Southeastern kicked off the night in fine fashion as Rafaela Raurich blasted her way home to win a tight finish in the 100 fly. Trailing Lynn’s Luna Mertins, the 2022 winner of the event, at he halfway point by 16-hundredths, Raurich came home in 28.32 to come over the top and pull out the win by just over a tenth. Raurich, who was the top seed coming into the meet, clocked a time of 53.16 that was one hundredth shy of her season best.

Mertins grabbed second in 53.27 while third went to Findlay’s Emily Mears-Bentley, who was in sixth place at the halfway point before clocking in a 28.10 split that was best in the field. Mears-Bentley swam a time of 53.39, and Tampa’s Isabelle Sering was fourth in 53.57.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

During his senior year, Findlay’s Timothy Stollings fell just short of a top-three finish in the 100 fly at the national championship meet, his time of 46.17 in the championship final finishing five hundredths back of the podium. But in his fifth year, Stollings would not be denied a title as he overtook teammate Camilo Marrugo down the stretch to win by three hundredths. Trailing by just over a tneth at the turn, Stollings came home in 24.76 to win the touch in 45.99, with Marrugo coming in at 45.99.

Another fifth-year swimmer, Jase Pinckney, took third in 46.17, just ahead of Drury’s Alejandro Villarejo (46.37), Tampa’s Adrian Aguilar (46.41) and McKendree’s Jackson Lustig (46.44).

Women’s 400 IM

She was a wire-to-wire winner one day earlier in the 200 IM, with Colorado Mesa fifth-year swimmer Benedict Nagy pulling away on the freestyle to win the shorter event. The 400 IM, however, was a total drubbing, with Nagy up by almost two seconds after backstroke before extending the lead to almost six seconds on breaststroke. The field closed slightly on freestyle, but it did not matter as Nagy cruised to an easy win.

The graduate transfer from Division I Nevada closed out her lone 400 IM campaign on the Division II level with a time of 4:10.40, which beat runnerup Andrea Gomez of Indy by an insane 4.65 seconds. Gomez clocked 4:15.05, leaving defending champion May Lowy of Nova in third place at 4:15.55.

Men’s 400 IM

In his second consecutive national title in the 200 IM, Colorado Mesa’s Benjamin Sampson finished three tenths off a six-year-old Division II national record as he clocked 1:41.92. In the 400 IM, the record would not evade him, but Sampson had plenty more to worry about with the presence of Indy’s Cedric Buessing, who was runnerup to Tampa’s Santiago Corredor one year ago.

Sampson led Buessing by three-quarters of a second after butterfly, and he maintained that edge on backstroke before pulling out to a one-second margin on breaststroke. Corredor was in contention for a second straight title through the first 200 yards before falling back. It looked as though Sampson would cruise to the wall, but Buessing had a 24.37 split waiting for the final 50 yards, out-splitting Sampson by almost a second and nearly pulling off the stunner.

In the end, though, Sampson clocked 3:40.22, with Buessing one hundredth back at 3:40.23. Both men obliterated the national record of 3:42.49 set by Simon Fraser’s Collyn Gagne six years ago. Corredor, meanwhile, held on sufficiently to take third in 3:46.26.

Women’s 200 Freestyle

In the 200 free final, Nova Southeastern’s Emily Treischmann got an early push from Azusa Pacific’s Montana White, but the swimmer who has dominated the distance races on the D2 level in recent years was not going to be denied over 200 yards. Indeed, Trieschmann pulled away to take the win by 1.87 seconds while coming in just three tenths off the D2 meet record.

Trieschmann clocked 1:45.60 for the win, adding to earlier victories in the 1000 free and 800 free relay. Simon Fraser’s Tori Meklensek placed second in 1:47.47, coming in two hundredths clear of White (1:47.49). Drury’s Josephine Bushell took fourth in 1:48.14, just head of Nova’s Rafaela Raurich, already the winner of the 100 fly earlier in the night, at 1:48.15 and Nova’s Emilia Ronnigdahl, last year’s winner in the 200 free, taking sixth in 1:48.51.

Colorado Mesa was the winner in the 400 medley relay, with its team of four sophomores never trailing never trailing the field despite a spirited second-half effort by a pair of individual winners from earlier in the evening on Nova Southeastern’s squad and a monster freestyle finish from Drury’s Ashlyn Moore. No, this one was all but decided when Agata Naskret split 53.08 on the backstroke leg to propel Mesa to a lead of more than a second.

Maddi Moran followed with a 1:01.51 breaststroke split, and then Kiara Borchardt (54.04) and Ada Qunell (49.89) did enough to hold onto win by less than a half-second in 3:38.52.

Nova placed second in 3:38.98 with a team of Maria GoncalvesHannah MontgomeryRafaela Raurich and Emily Trieschmann. Raurich, the winner of the 100 fly and a 200 free finalist earlier in the night, went 52.66 on the fly leg while Trieschmann came home in 49.15. Men’s 400 Medley Relay

A second national record went down in the session in the men’s 400 medley relay, and just like with the previous record-breaking swim in the 400 IM, the runnerup swam faster than the previous top time. An electric race brought McKendree into the wall in 3:07.11, two tenths clear of Drury’s 3:07.31, with both squads under the previous mark of 3:07.38 set by Queens seven years ago.

Patryk Rozenek set the pace for McKendree with a 46.35 backstroke split, behind only 400 IM record-setter Benjamin Sampson of Colorado Mesa (46.07) and Lewis’ Nico Jacinto (46.19). On breaststroke, Drury got back into the race as Davi Mourao split 51.19, with Drury two tenths behind Lewis and McKendree at the halfway point.

Jackson Lustig had finished a disappointing sixth in the 100 fly earlier in the night, but he went 45.85, fastest in the field, on that leg to pull his team into the lead. However, Alejandro Villarejo stayed close enough with his 45.97, so it all came down to a pair of freshmen on the anchor leg. Drury’s Yuri Cabral slightly out-split McKendree’s Tyson Upton, 42.77 to 42.87, but Upton got to the wall two tenths ahead to secure the win and the new record.

Lewis ended up third with Jacinto, Ahmed IsmailDavidson Vincent and Misha Semenov combining for a time of 3:08.46. The Indy team of Cedric BuessingBrayden ColeOskar Sawicki and Joao Silva was just behind in 3:08.57.
