NCAA Division II Championships, Night 2 Finals: Maurice Grabowski Wins 50 Free, Powers Relay Record

Maurice Grabowski had a heck of a night at the NCAA Division II Championships on Wednesday. The Lynn junior clocked in at 18.97 seconds, a rare Division II swim under 19 seconds, then led of Lynn’s NCAA record in the 200 medley relay to finish the night.

The second night was a narratively rich one, with a few repeat champions – one long delayed – and a handful of runners-up turned champions on the opening night of individual finals from the Deaconess Aquatic Center in Evansville, Indiana.

Team Scores after the first full night of competition:

Women’s 1,000 freestyle

Hailey Williams and Justice Beard were the top two returnees from last year, finishing third and fourth, respectively. Tuesday, as the top two seeds, they dueled until Beard pulled away to win in 9:45.71, the first installment of what could be a big week for the Missouri-St. Louis junior.

Williams was second this year, the senior from Nova Southeastern finishing in 9:50.42. Only Tampa’s Burlingtyn Bokos also broke 10 minutes, and only by .02 to finish third.

Tampa went 3-4, Bokos followed by Laura Hodgson, who had been eighth last year. Nova Southeastern finished second and 11th. Colorado Mesa took a slight hit with Olivia Hansson, the third-fastest seed and last year’s sixth-place finisher, sliding to eighth.

Men’s 1,000 freestyle

Tampa’s Jacob Hamlin is on top in the 1,000 again, his time of 8:50.02 slightly off the 8:47.23 he used to win last year. It’s still big points for the Trojans, Hamlin its only swimmer in the top 10, and dispelled the notion of him entering as the fourth seed by times.

Second was Sebastian Camacho Gomez of Findlay in 8:51.45, nearly eight seconds under his seed time. Top seed Swann Plaza of Indy was nearly a second quicker than his seed, but it was only good for third. West Chester’s Paul Demesy was fourth for a second straight year, the only other sub-9-minute swimmer in 8:58.08, down from a 9:13 seed. Hamlin and Demesy were the only holdovers from last year’s top eight.

Women’s 200 individual medley

Nova Southeastern’s Emilia Ronningdal won the 200 IM as a freshman. She was shy of the top step for the next two years and 150 yards. But a furious final 50 led the senior back to the title, a time of 1:58.83 edging Drury’s Gwen Bergum by .28 seconds.

Ronningdal was down by .18 seconds when the swimmers turned for home. But she split 28.41 coming home to 28.87 from Bergum to get to the wall first. Ronningdal was fifth last year and third as a sophomore. She went 1:57.78 as a freshman but was 2:00.23 in the A final last year.

Indy’s Celina Schmidt joined them under two minutes in 1:59.42 for bronze. Livia Rodrigues, the top seed entering the meet out of West Florida, was fourth in 2:00.83, .01 over Emily Mears-Bentley of Findlay. Drury went 2-6-8, the same as prelims, via Maria Fe Munoz and Nikol Maniko, the latter two flopping places from the morning.

Tampa had Sidni Meister in seventh. Caroline Foltz won the B final.

Men’s 200 individual medley

There’s a new 200 IM champion, and it’s two-fold in leaving Drury slightly disappointed.

Jeremias Pock of Indy, the top seed entering the meet and in prelims, went 1:42.39 to rout the field. His winning margin was 1.93 seconds.

Pock wrested the title away from Drury’s Ivan Adamchuk, who finished sixth. Adding insult to injury, the second-fastest time of prelims came from the B final, but it won’t budge Joao Nogueira from ninth. The Panthers senior went 1:44.16 to win the B final. That was quicker than the 1:44.32 of McKendree’s Volodymyr Gavrysh that officially took second place.

Nogueira’s speed meant Adamchuk was fourth among the Drury swimmers at night by the watch. Alvaro Zornoza Quiros finished third in 1:44.61. Belhassen Ben Miled was fifth in 1:44.83. (In between was Will Beckstead-Holman of Tampa, officially fourth in 1:44.68, and Nico Basten of Indy, in 1:44.69 from the B final for 10th).

With last year’s titlist, Bryn Greenwaldt, moved on to Virginia, her runner-up took a step up. Indy’s Kirabo Namutebi went 22.10 to win the title. She was a quarter-second clear of the field. She entered as the top seed and was third in prelims.

Nova Southeastern’s Kristina Orban finished second in 22.35. Teammate Zsofia Kurdi was fifth in 22.67, and Maya Esparza finished ninth for 40 points for the Sharks. Orban was fourth last year, Esparza seventh and Kurdi eighth.

Agata Naskret of West Florida finished third in 22.55. That was the time that Findlay’s Troie Grubbs used to take the top seed in prelims, but she slid to fourth in 22.59 in finals. Tampa got Tilde Morin in sixth in 22.78 plus Laney Jones in 10th.

A year ago, Drury’s erstwhile title run got a huge boost from Israel Zavaleta sweeping both events. This year, it’s advantage to Colorado Mesa in the team race.

The Mavericks scored 37 points with a 2-8-9 finish, led by Ryan Campbell in second. The individual title went to Max Wasiniak of Wayne State, who was first in prelims and then scored 536.25 to win the finals. The junior was fifth last year.

Delta State’s Santiano Santodomingo finished third in 528.75. Clarion had the next four finishers, led by sophomore Zakaray Kennedy in fourth. He and Michael Clamm each topped 500 points. Sixth was Ethan Coronado, who was fourth last year and was the second seed out of prelims.

Women’s 200 medley relay

Nova Southeastern wrestled the relay record away from Indy, but a fatal blow might have been dealt to another podium contender.

Nova’s quartet of Mollie Morfelt, Hannah Montgomery, Kristina Orban and Maya Esparza went 1:37.95. That chopped .35 seconds off the winning time of Indy from last year.

Findlay was second in 1:38.49, Helmi Kakela going 27.33 on breaststroke. Nova and Findlay were tied for second place at the final handoff until Esparza dropped a 21.88 coming home for the Sharks.

Findlay finished .04 up on West Florida, which was in clean water early thanks to a split of 23.90 from Agata Naskret, with no one else even in the 24s. Indy was fourth in 1:38.96, needing a 21.71 from Kirabo Namutebi on the end to rally them up a spot. Wingate was fifth.

Colorado Mesa entered as the fourth seed, but it got DQed, which might torpedo its chances of a top-three finish.

Men’s 200 medley relay

Maurice Grabowski was fast in free. He was really fast in backstroke.

The Lynn senior went 20.99 to lead the Fighting Knights to an NCAA record in 1:24.15. The team of Grabowski, Maxim Tsyfarov, Vitaly Kostin and Enzo Constable dashed three tenths off Indy’s record from 2024. Lynn was eighth last year in 1:26.07, with Grabowski splitting 19.01 off the end in free.

Lynn was in control from the beginning. Drury finished second in 1:24.63 in a massively close race for second, with Tampa third in 1:24.68 and Colorado Mesa fourth in 1:24.70. Drury got the edge with an 18.79 anchor leg from Lucas Minuer. Tampa was nearest to Grabowski off the front with Rufus Bernhardt in 21.43. Colorado Mesa had the fastest butterflyer in Oskar Sawicki’s 19.70. Indy was running second and within .21 of Lynn at the final handoff thanks to a 22.76 from Jeremias Pock and a 20.11 from Elias Noe but slipped to fifth in 1:24.97, a tenth up on Grand Valley.
