HOPE COLLEGE, Mich., Feb. 13. SEVERAL outstanding performances marked the opening day of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Association (MIAA) swimming and diving chamnpionships being hosted by Hope College at the Holland Aquatics Center.

The three-day meet continues through Saturday. Prelims on Friday will begin at 10 a.m. with finals at 6 p.m.

Building their first-day leads off dominating performances in diving, Kalamazoo and Calvin are leading the men's and women's competition respectively.

Kalamazoo, which is seeking its eighth straight men's crown, has 214 points after Thursday's competition followed by Hope 151, Calvin 124, Albion 68 and Alma 53. The Hornets took the top four places in one-meter diving amassing 57 points in the event. Hope had none.

diving, follows with 174 points. Kalamazoo is next with 90, Alma 75, Albion 70 and Saint Mary's 47.

Hope was not without its outstanding performances on this first day. In the men's meet the Flying Dutchmen won both relays and had two qualifying performances for the NCAA Division III championships next month.

The individual standout was Hope senior Brian Slagh of Zeeland who established MIAA and pool records in winning the 500-yard freestyle. Slagh beat three-time defending champion J.D. Schneider of Kalamazoo with a national qualifying time (4:33.68).

Slagh also swam on Hope's two champion relay teams. The 200-yard medley relay team won the MIAA's gold medal for a 14th consecutive year. Joining Slagh in posting an NCAA conditional qualifying time (1:23.56) were sophomore Jeff Heydlauff, junior Chris Hamstra and freshman Travis Barkel.
