NCAA Div. I Women: Washington State Downs San Jose State, 140-112

PULLMAN, Wash., Oct. 19. THE Washington State University women’s swim team opened its season by claiming victory against San Jose State Saturday, 140-112. Co-captain Lindsay Henahan led the Cougars with wins in two individual events in addition to one relay.

Neither school has a men's team, both having been abolished in the name of "equality."

The Cougar win came in the debut for WSU Head Coach Erica Quam. Quam spent the past five seasons as an assistant coach at Southern Methodist University.

WSU jumped out to a quick lead with wins in the first six events. In the 100 breaststroke, Cougar newcomers recorded a one-two finish. Freshman Jane Copland finished first with a time of 1:06.01, while freshman, Lesley Ouellette placed second with a time of 1:07.54.

"We stepped up and raced all the way through the meet. We went faster than we did in our intrasquad meet last week," said Quam. "Everybody was consistently better and showed that the hard work on a lot of the little things we have been doing paid off."

In addition to her win in the 100 breaststroke, Copland, a native of Wellington, New Zealand, also captured victories in the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.09 and as a member of the 400 medley relay team, which placed first with a time of 3:53.25.

Henahan, a senior from Rochester, N.Y, swam well, claiming victory in two individual events in addition to the 400 medley relay. She won the 200 butterfly, with a personal best time of 2:05.21, as well as the 100 freestyle in 53.39.

"It was good to see Lindsay Henahan race her lifetime best in the 200 fly." Quam stated. "That is a good reflection of the hard work she put in this summer."

Jill Olson and Sasha Taylor also achieved victory in two individual events. Olson, a senior from Seattle, took first in the 1000 freestyle in 10:35.02 and the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.26. Taylor, a junior from Winchester, Ontario, Canada, claimed victory in the 200 freestyle in 1:55.77 and the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:13.79.

Nicole Chinn, a junior from Seattle, also assisted the Cougars with an individual victory as well as one relay. Chinn placed first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 59.82. She was also a member of the victorious 400 medley relay team.

The Cougars will compete at the University of the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., Oct. 25-26.
