NCAA Div. I Women: Stanford Gets By UCLA, 159-141

STANFORD, CA., January 31. THE No. 7-ranked Stanford (6-2, 2-1 Pac-10) got back on the winning track here this afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center with a 159-141 win over over No. 13 UCLA (5-2, 2-2 Pac-10) in a key conference dual-meet.

After losing to Arizona at Tucson last weekend, the Cardinal — led by doubles from Tara Kirk, Kristen Caverly and Evins Cameron plus a sweep of the diving events — were too much for their southland visitors. Cardinal Mckenze Murphy, winner of the three-meter boared and teammate Ashlee Rosenthal, tops on the 1-meter, were the other Cardinal individual winners.

Kirk swept the 100-200 breaststrokes to remain unbeaten in both races this year. She recorded an NCAA "A" cut of 1:00.94 to extend her collegiate unbeaten streak to 22, and she picked up an NCAA "B" mark in the 200 (2:14.68).

(She leads the country in both races and her 2:09.66 against Arizona State last week is fastest-ever in a dual meet. She's also defending NCAA 100-200 breast champ and American/NCAA record-holder in both too.)

Caverly splashed to wins in the 200 back (1:59.47) and 200 IM (2:00.91), recording NCAA "B" times in each. Cameron won both the 500 (4:56.30) and 1000 frees (season-best 10:04.42). Soph Lacey Boutwell won the 100 free with an NCAA "B" cut (51.02), was runner-up to UCLA's Sara Platzer in the 50 free and also swam the anchor leg on Stanford's winning 200 free relay squad (1:42.96, NCAA "B" mark).

"We competed hard," said Stanford head coach Richard Quick after the victory. "With three different swimmers winning two events each and an outstanding effort from our divers we were able to prevail."

UCLA rookie Kim Vandenberg swept the fly events with victories in the 100 (55.11, NCAA "B" mark) and 200 (1:58.17, NCAA "A" mark). Teammate and Swedish national team member Malin Svahnstrom, won the 200 free (1:49.68, NCAA "B" mark) and Bruin Taylor Spivey took the 100 back (55.59, NCAA "B" mark). Platzer's winning 50 free (23.25) is an NCAA "B" mark — and she's school record-holder in both sprints too (22.46-49.67)

Platzer, Vandenberg, Erica Shugart and Svahnstrom captured the 200 free relay in an NCAA "B" cut 1:33.64.

Stanford's win was the Cardinal's 20th in its last 22 meets with the only losses coming to defending NCAA champ Auburn at home last November and to Arizona on the road last Saturday.

The Cardinal welcomes No. 4 USC (4-2, 2-1 Pac-10) in another key Pac-10 dual meet on Saturday (12 pm, PST).
