NCAA Div. I Women: Penn State Takes a Narrow Lead Over Indiana After Day Two of Big 10 Champs

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 21. PENN State leading the women's Big 10 Swimming & Diving Championship? Why, you might as well say Joe Paterno has gone to the NFL!

Yet after the completion of Day 2's splashing at the Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan, fourth-year Coach Bill Dorenkamp's Lady Nittany Lions are atop the standings with a close 261-253 margin over Coach Dorsey Tierney's Indiana Hoosiers.

Third are Eric Hansen's Wisconsin Badgers, who were a surprising first leader after the opening's day diving and relay events. Next comes defending champ Michigan (176) with Purdue fifth (171).

Jim Richardson's Lady Wolverines are defending Big 10 champs and have won the conference title a record 12 times (1988-'98 and again in '01). Ohio State won the first six championships since the meet's inception in 1982, with Minnestoa winning a pair in '99 and '00.

Penn State got the competition off to a quick start with a national No. 1 clocking of 1:30.45 en route to winning the 200 free relay — a Nittany Lion school record. Junior sprinter Kathryn Hostetler, sister of former PSU sprinter (and 50 free record-holder Brian) anchored in a quick 22.32 to ensure the victory over Wisconsin (1:31.99).

Brian Hostetler's pr and PSU record is 19.75 from the '99 Big 10s.

The Lions also scored an individual victory when froshwoman Erin Mulshenock went a pr 2:00.92 to win the 200 IM, just under the auto cut of 2:01.05. Teammate Corrie Clark was fourth in a consideration 2:02.26.

Penn State racked up another 40 points with its win in the 400 medley relay (3:40.16), well within the consideration cut of 3:46+.

After a 57.03 leadoff leg by junior Kate Bruzda, soph Kristen Woodring took over and split 1:00.11 on the breast leg. Then Clark touched in 53.57 on the fly leg and anchor Deidre Dlugonski came home in 49.45.
Second was Purdue (3:41.12, also a consideration time).

Woodring was third at last year's NCAAs in the 100 breast and won the Big 10 in 59.77, history's ninth-fastest performance (fourth performer). The two women who beat her, Stanford's Tara Kirk and Georgia's Ashley Roby, are both back too, so this race next month at Texas [site of the '02 NCAA Championships] could see the first sub 59.0 clocking.

Additionally, Arizona State has the Olympic and World 200 breast champ, Hungary's Agnes Kovacs, who's been 1:00+ in her rookie year at Tempe. (However, there are rumors that Kovacs will not be allowed to compete.)

Wisconsin got a big boost when frosh Carly Piper went a meet-record 4:43.41 to win the 500 free, fourt nationally. The old record was a 4:46.07 by Ohio State's Susan Gottlieb from a decade ago. The Big 10 record is a 4:41.26 by Badger Ellen Stonebraker from the 1999 NCAAs at Georgia (site of this year's men's meet).

Piper's teammate, junior Jennifer Lyman, won the 50 free in a pr 22.99.

The 1-meter diving event saw a very close finish between winner Sara Reiling (Indiana) and runner-up Lisette Planken (Iowa) with a mere 1.15 points separating the duo — 307.00-305.95.

Penn State has never won the women's Big 10 title although they were runners-up last season. The men won their only onference crown a couple of years ago under Coach Peter Brown, who is now the aquatics director and head coach for women and men at Brown.
