NCAA Div. I Women: FSU Beats Rutgers, Falls to North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Jan. 11. FLORIDA State’s 20th-ranked women’s swimming and diving team defeated Rutgers, 151-149, before dropping its first Atlantic Coast Conference meet to No. 11 North Carolina, 186-114, in a tri-meet at Chapel Hill, N.C. on Saturday. With the split, the Lady Seminoles' record is 11-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Junior Emma Dutton and sophomore Chelsie Lerew led FSU by picking up the Lady Seminoles’ only victories of the day with two each. Overall, the FSU women finished in the top three 17 times out of the 16 events.

Dutton earned her first win in the 100-yard breaststroke with a finishing time of 1:02.94. She then won the 200-breast at 2:16.90 before finishing second in the 200-yard IM (2:06.59).

The Lady Seminoles’ diving squad played a huge role in the defeat of Rutgers by sweeping first, second and third place on both the one- and three-meter boards. Lerew won the one-meter at 272.05 and later won the three-meter event with a score of 303.15. Sophomore Courtney McClow finished second on both boards, while fellow sophomore Tiffany Manning placed third in each event.

The Lady Seminoles sealed the victory over Rutgers in the final event, the 400-freestyle relay, by earning enough points to outscore the Scarlet Knights with third and fourth-place finishes.

The Lady Seminoles will end their dual meet season on Jan. 25 with a home meet against LSU at noon at the Bobby Leach Center.
