NCAA Div. I Women: Cal Stomps San Jose State, Oregon State

SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 15. COACH Teri McKeever's Cal Golden Bears women's swimming and diving team (4-1) defeated both San Jose State, 178-113, and Oregon State, 154-108, in a triangular meet at the SJS Aquatics Center this afternoon. Oregon State beat San Jose State, 165-118.

The men were unable to swim since San Jose State and Oregon State have both eliminated their men's teams.

OSU Sophomore Naya Higashijima scored a trio of wins in the 500 free (4:56.48), 1000 (10:06.26) and 200 fly (2:01.52). She made the "Big Show" (NCAA Championships) last season as a freshman and set a Beaver school-record in the prelims of the 200 fly (1:57.72).

Cal junior Danielle Becks notched two wins on the day in the 100 (52.22) and 200 frees (1:51.76).

Froshwomen Helen Silver, who has shown excellent promise in her first few collegiate duals, and rookie teammate Whitney Rockwell, also were victorious for da Bears. Silver took first in the 100 back (58.38) and Rockwell won the 50 free (24.17).

Another "rookie," freshman Ashley Chandler — a valued addition to Cal's distance corps — placed second in the 1000 free (10:17.24).

Other runner-up finishes for the victors included junior Natalie Griffith in the 200 free (1:52.78), freshman Flora Kong in the 200 fly (2:02.46), senior Michelle Harper in the 50 free (24.26), sophomore Marcelle Miller in the 200 back (2:20.75) and sophomore Lauren Medina in the 500 free (5:00.40).

The 200 medley relay team of Silver, Miller, Kong and Harper placed third at 1:47.57.

Senior diver Christina Flynn swept the boards, winning both the one-meter (245.02) and three-meter (250.28) events.

Cal hosts the Rice Owls in its second home meet of the season at Spieker Aquatics Center Sunday, Nov. 17 at 10 AM PST.
