NCAA Div. I: Texas Men, Women Leading Big 12 After Day Two

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Feb. 21. THE No. 3-ranked University of Texas men's and women's swimming and diving teams both remained in first-place, capturing all 12 individual and relay titles, during Thursday night's finals at the Big 12 Championships at the Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas.

The Texas men's team is in first with 398.50 points, followed by Texas A&M (205.5) and Missouri (170). (Only three men's teams remain in the Big 12 after Nebraska, Iowa State and Kansas all cut their men's teams simultaneously last year claiming — falsely — they were doing so for budgetary reasons.)

The UT women's squad leads the competition with 355 points, while Texas A&M stands in second with 192 points. They are trailed by Missouri (126), Kansas (121) and Nebraska (67).

Junior transfer Joscelin Yeo (Republic of Singapore) captured her first-career Big 12 title in the 200 IM, touching first in 1:58.54. The victory came following her stand out performance during the 200 IM prelims in which she clocked a Big 12 and UT record-breaking mark of 1:58.18.

"Joscelin's win shows what can happen when a team works together," UT women¹s co-head coach Mike Walker said. "We probably have one of the best groups of 200 IM swimmers in the country right now and I think
tonight her goal was to pull as many of her teammates with her as possible. That sort of teamwork cements a group working for a common goal. That was a fun event for us."

The previous Big 12 200 IM record was set by Julia Russell of Nebraska (1:59.13) in 1997 and the former UT mark was recorded by Dorsey Tierney (1:58.67) in 1992.

Senior transfer Lauren Thies (Portland, Ore.) also captured her first conference title in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:47.16, while junior Erin Phenix (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the way in the 50 free
(22.81). The win gives Phenix, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist, her eighth career Big 12 title.

On the men's side, junior Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) finished first in the 500 free, swimming a season team-best mark of 4:19.87. Sophomore Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) won the 50 free (20.06), while freshman Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) won his first-ever conference championship in the 200 IM with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:45.85.

"I think our team did a pretty good job today," Texas men's head coach Eddie Reese said. "It is always tough, after you have done your very best time in the prelims, to turn around and go even faster during that
evening's finals. We had some real strong efforts out there tonight and I am proud of our performance."

Senior Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) continued his diving dominance on day two in the three-meter springboard. The two-time NCAA Diver of the Year won the three-meter springboard event with a score of 691.30, his third consecutive three-meter crown sixth career Big 12 title.

Day three of competition at the 2002 Big 12 Championships resumes on Friday, Feb. 22, with preliminaries beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by
finals at 6 p.m. All tickets for the four-day meet are general admission, with doors opening one hour before each session. An all-session pass is $10, while one-day passes will be sold as $5 for adults, $4 for students and $2 for all fans which are in high school or under.
