NCAA Div. I Men: Notre Dame Ends Dual Meet Season With a Win Over Cleveland State

NOTRE DAME, Ind., Feb. 9. THE University of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team completed its dual meet season with a 128-106 victory over Cleveland State in Rolfs Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Irish complete the dual meet section of the 2001-02 schedule 11-3 and look forward to the BIG EAST
Championship in Uniondale, N.Y., beginning Feb. 21.

Notre Dame won eight of the 13 events on the meet schedule, beginning with a one-two sweep in the 400 medley relay. The team of Dean Wolf, Jason Fitzpatrick, David Horak and Matt Obringer took first in 3:27.26, followed by Jason Colettis, Mike Koss, Lucas Wymore and Drew Pittman in 3:31.50.

Senior Jonathan Pierce (competing in his last home dual meet along with classmates Horak, Austin Anderson, Koss and Elliott Drury) won the second event of the meet – taking the 1,000 freestyle in 9:30.99.

Cleveland State rebounded to win the 200 and 50 freestyle races, but David Moisan put the Irish back in control of the meet with a victory in the 200 individual medley (1:56.50).

Andy Maggio followed up with his first of two diving victories, taking the three-meter competition with 333.60 points. Maggio eventually won the one-meter diving event with 339.29 points later in the meet.

The Notre Dame win streak continued in the 200 butterfly, where sophomore J.R. Teddy continued to dominate in his signature event with a 1:53.66 victory. Also notable, sophomore Brian Coughlan qualified for the first BIG EAST Championship meet of his career, taking second in 1:55.08. The conference meet qualifying time to beat was 1:55.09.

David Horak won the only backstroke race of the night, taking the 200 back in 1:51.02. Matt Obringer then shut the door on the visiting Vikings, winning the 500 freestyle in 4:41.57.

The Irish will rest up, then train for a week heading into the 2002 BIG EAST Championship. This year's championship meet is set at the traditional Nassau County Aquatics Center in Uniondale, N.Y. (Feb.
21-23).
