NCAA Div. I Men: Gophers Are Golden After Day One of Big 10 Champs

BLOOMINGTON, IN., Feb. 28 — The Gophers were golden this evening and as a result reside firmly atop the standings after Day 1 of the Big 10 men's swim
championships.

The meet is underway through Saturday at the new Counsilman/Billingsley Aquatics Complex on the campus of Indiana University, named for the Hoosiers' legendary swimming and diving coaches.

Coach Dennis Dale's Minnesota Golden Gophers are defending Big 10 champs and showed their strength this evening with a runner-up finish to Penn State in the opening 200 free relay, then a second, sixth and eighth in the 500 free; a fourth and seventh in the 200 IM; a seventh and eighth in the 50 free and a win the 400 medley relay.

Gopher Justin Mortimer, a soph who was fourth at NCAAs last season in the 1650 free (pr and school-record 14:47.82), clocked 4:18.06 in the 50 tonight to finish second behind Michigan's Dan Ketchum.

Ketchum, also a sophomore, swam a pr 4:16.30 — the nation's fastest time this year — to win. His time was an automatic NCAA cut.

In the 200 IM, Northwestern soph Anthony Swanson made a breakthrough with his initial Big 10 individual title, going a pr and schol-record 1:45.64. His old pr and Wildcat record was 1:46.46 from the prelims of last year's NCAAs.

Second was Michigan senior and defending Big 10 400 IM champ Tim Siciliano with a pr 1:46.97. Siciliano, a Southern California native, will be going for a record fourth-consecutive 400 IM title at NCAAs. His time knocked a second off his old pr of 1:47.84 from the 2000 Big 10s.

In the 50 free, Penn State's Robert Mollettiere came close to the Big 10 record of 19.60 with his 19.68 pr, while teammate Eugene Botes clocked 19.89 for second and Indiana's Clase Anderson picked up the bronze (pr 19.93).

Ohio State Buckeye Heath Knowling scored 342.15 to win the 1-meter board and Minnesota capped off the splashing with a 3:11.41 win inthe 400 medley relay
— just six tenths off their Big 10 record 3:10.79 that won last year's championship.

Todd Smolinski, the Gophers' 100 back Big 10 record-holder, led off in 46.51; Jeff Hackler split 53.21 for the breast leg, Chad Krastins went 47.19 on the fly and anchor Allen Ong touched in 43.50.

Wisconsin gave chase and finished in 3:11.81 for second.
